Statistics of hazardous chemicals transport vehicles in the first five months

July 08,2024

Dangerous chemicals (also called dangerous goods, the same below) refer to chemicals that are flammable, explosive, toxic, harmful and radioactive, and are prone to cause casualties and property damage during transportation, loading and unloading, and storage and custody, and therefore require special protection. The vehicles that transport hazardous chemicals are hazardous chemical transport vehicles, which are a smaller market segment in the special vehicles of the commercial vehicle industry. Depending on the transported items, hazardous chemical transport vehicles can be divided into oil transport vehicles, chemical liquid transport vehicles and explosive goods transport vehicles. According to tonnage, they can be divided into light, medium and heavy types. According to the length of the carriage, they can be divided into 3.5-5 meters, 5-6 meters, 6-7 meters, 7-8 meters, 8-9 meters, 9-10 meters, 10-11 meters, 11-12 meters and other models.
According to the latest terminal registration information, from January to May 2024, a total of 10,044 hazardous chemicals transport vehicles were sold, a year-on-year increase of 9.33% (9,187 vehicles were sold from January to May last year), and the growth rate ranked second in the past five years. So, what are the characteristics of the hazardous chemicals transportation market from January to May this year?
Feature 1: The year-on-year growth rate ranks second in the past five years, at an upper-middle level
Table 1, sales volume and year-on-year growth rate of hazardous chemicals transport vehicles in the past five years (data source: terminal registration)

As can be seen from the table above, from January to May 2024, a total of 10,044 hazardous chemicals transport vehicles were sold, a year-on-year increase of 9.33%, which is the second largest year-on-year sales increase in the past five years, indicating that the current hazardous chemicals transport vehicle market is performing well. It is mainly related to the current market environment. According to the survey and analysis, the main reasons are roughly as follows:
First, the current economic environment is in a recovery growth, and the demand for hazardous chemicals transport vehicles is also recovering;
Second, the sales base of the same period last year was not too high, which laid the foundation for the year-on-year growth from January to May this year.
Feature 2: Heavy-duty sales are the largest, followed by medium-duty vehicles, and light-duty sales are the least; the year-on-year increase in light vehicles is the largest; from the perspective of each tonnage type, 3-5 ton blue-plate light truck models lead the way, and 8-10 ton models lead the way
Table 2, according to terminal registration data, divided by tonnage, the sales and year-on-year growth of hazardous goods models in each tonnage segment from January to May 2024 are as follows

The above table shows that, by tonnage, hazardous chemicals are divided, and the sales volume and year-on-year growth of each model from January to May 2024 show the following characteristics:
---Light vehicles (1.8 tons-6 tons) sold a total of 2,996 units, a year-on-year increase of 94.9%, which is the market segment with the largest year-on-year growth; among light vehicles, the sales volume of 3-5 tons models was 2,661 units, and the year-on-year growth was 165.8%, accounting for nearly 90% of the light vehicle market. In other words, in the light hazardous chemical transport vehicle market. Blue-plate light trucks are the best-selling hazardous chemical vehicles, which are the mainstream market; while the sales volume of models in other tonnage segments is not much.
---Medium-sized vehicles (6-14 tons) sold a total of 3,847 units, a year-on-year decrease of 16.4%, which is the market segment with the largest decline. Among medium-sized vehicles, 10-14 ton models sold 2,299 units, down 19.3% year-on-year, accounting for 71.2% of the medium-sized vehicle market, and are the main models in the medium-sized vehicle market; while 8-10 ton models sold 588 units, up 181.3% year-on-year, leading the market of hazardous chemicals transport vehicles from January to May this year; --- Heavy-duty vehicles (above 14 tons) sold a total of 3,818 units, the largest market segment of hazardous chemicals transport vehicles, up 0.39% year-on-year. Among heavy-duty vehicles, 14-19 ton models sold 1,710 units, up 7.8% year-on-year, accounting for 45% of the heavy-duty vehicle market, and are the main models in the heavy-duty vehicle market; followed by 26-32 ton models, with sales of 1,213 units, accounting for 31.8%, down 15.4% year-on-year, the largest decline among heavy-duty vehicles. Overall, from January to May 2024, a total of 10,044 hazardous chemicals transport vehicles were sold, a year-on-year increase of 9.33%, of which heavy-duty vehicles had the largest sales, followed by medium-duty vehicles, and light-duty vehicles had the least sales; the year-on-year increase in light-duty vehicles was the largest.
From the perspective of specific subdivided models by tonnage, 3-5 ton blue-plate light-duty hazardous chemicals transport vehicles lead the entire hazardous chemicals transport vehicle market. This is mainly because blue-plate light-duty hazardous chemicals transport vehicles serve the urban distribution market, have the most demand, and can be driven with a C license, with a low entry threshold.
Feature 3: Sichuan, Guangdong, and Xinjiang rank in the top three
According to terminal registration data, the top 12 regions in the country for hazardous chemicals transportation sales from January to May 2024 (only regional markets with sales of more than 400 vehicles are counted)

The above figure shows the regional flow of terminal sales of hazardous chemicals from January to May 2024:
--Sichuan, Guangdong and Xinjiang ranked the top three, with cumulative sales of 1,010, 980 and 555 vehicles respectively. Guangdong is the only province with sales exceeding 1,000 vehicles, accounting for 10.06% of the market, winning the championship;
---The sales in other regions are all below 500 vehicles.
Feature 4: The proportion of gas-powered vehicles increased the most year-on-year, with the strongest momentum
Table 3, based on terminal registration data, divided by power type, the sales proportion and year-on-year change of hazardous chemical transport vehicles from January to May 2024:

As can be seen from the table above, among the sales of various types of power hazardous chemical transport vehicles from January to May 2024:
