"Hydrogen" core, zero-carbon jointly builds a green supply chain

June 07,2024

At the 2024 Shanghai International Carbon Neutrality Expo, Cummins joined hands with important supply chain logistics partners to jointly start Accelera's green journey, and build a green supply chain logistics ecosystem based in Shanghai. At the project launch ceremony, Cummins and corporate representatives from Shanghai Yanghai Logistics Co., Ltd., Xinjie Logistics Group Co., Ltd., and Shanghai Longsai Logistics Co., Ltd. discussed the carbon reduction needs and energy-saving and emission reduction methods in warehousing logistics and transportation and distribution operations, and unanimously agreed that hydrogen energy technology is the key to helping both supply and demand sides achieve carbon reduction goals. The successful signing of the project marks a solid step for Cummins in promoting the green transformation of the supply chain.

In the journey of promoting the global transition to sustainable energy, Cummins Accelera injects new impetus into the industry's green supply chain with advanced hydrogen fuel cell technology. Cummins hydrogen fuel cells have been used in nearly 3,000 sets worldwide, mainly in commercial vehicles, rail transit, buses and power generation. In December 2022, the first batch of domestically produced HD120 fuel cells went into production and was successfully delivered to customers. Since then, the fuel cell business has entered the fast lane of development in China.

Terrence Taylor, Executive Director of Global Product Planning and Projects at Cummins Accelera, said:
Cummins is moving towards its zero-carbon goal through continuous innovation and investment. At present, Cummins-driven hydrogen fuel cell bus projects and urban green slag truck projects in Shanghai have accumulated more than 11 million kilometers of safe driving, fully demonstrating the commercialization potential and environmental benefits of hydrogen energy in public transportation and heavy-duty transportation, and providing green and sustainable energy solutions for the industry's zero-carbon transportation capacity transformation.
Cummins attaches importance to the green synergy of the entire value chain from raw material production, manufacturing, distribution and retail, user consumption to recycling and processing. It has become an industry consensus to jointly achieve carbon reduction goals and promote the green development of the industrial chain and supply chain through the coordinated efforts of both supply and demand. Cummins Accelera zero-carbon technology products take into account both social value and economic value, help logistics partners accelerate the transformation of green transportation capacity, and as a key node in the industrial chain, stimulate the synergy and resource integration of the entire chain, thereby promoting the green and low-carbon development of the entire chain.

Cummins has not only made breakthroughs in the innovation and application of hydrogen energy technology, but also fully implemented its commitment to the sustainable development strategy of "PLANET 2050" in terms of environmental and social benefits of supply chain management, and achieved remarkable results. Cheng Xiangang, general manager of Cummins Smart Supply Chain (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and director of supply chain logistics of Cummins China, introduced the results of the green transformation of the supply chain to the guests present, mainly including:
Solar photovoltaic project: In China, 11 factories have deployed solar photovoltaic devices, with an annual power generation of more than 22,000,000 kWh, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 7,000 households.
Energy efficiency improvement: Through management and technical means, greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by more than 20,000 tons (in 2023).
Packaging waste reduction: From 2019 to the end of 2023, factories in China began to implement packaging waste reduction measures, with packaging waste reduced by 22%, and the proportion of recycled packaging increased to 53% (based on the 2018 value).
Transport emission reduction: Cummins China has a total of 22 entities that have joined the green transport capacity practice, and will carry out pilot practices in Wuhan, the Yangtze River Delta, Beijing and other regions; in terms of international transportation, reduce air cargo and turn to sea transportation to reduce carbon footprint.

Meng Xiangsheng, Director of Green Development and Standard Innovation Department of Lingang Group, said:
Cummins, as a benchmark hydrogen energy technology company settled in Lingang, has successfully selected 160 hydrogen energy dump trucks driven by hydrogen fuel cells into the national fuel cell vehicle demonstration project, becoming a model in the industry. Lingang Group will fully support Cummins in developing zero-carbon power solutions in terms of hydrogen source guarantee, infrastructure construction, industry standards, and industrial ecological construction, and work together on the road of green and low-carbon development to better promote the widespread application of clean energy and the green transformation of the industry.

This event brought together some large manufacturing companies and professional supply chain logistics companies in Shanghai and Lingang areas to jointly build and share zero-carbon transportation capacity and supply chain green transformation pilot projects. In the future, Cummins will use "points" to lead "chains", continue to play its advantages in the field of hydrogen energy and green supply chains, expand its zero-carbon power chain cooperation with governments, industry partners and research institutions, and jointly promote the green transformation of the supply chain.
