SANY Heavy Energy Wind Turbines Scale the "Roof of the World"

August 15,2023

August 15, 2023, Tibet, China, Recently, the first batch of turbines from the highest-altitude wind power project in China, the Sanyuanhe Tibet Cuomeizhegu Wind Farm, has successfully connected to the grid and started generating power. All five turbines in the initial grid connection are SANY Heavy Energy single units with a capacity of 3.6 MW each, making them the largest wind turbines currently operating in China's extremely high-altitude regions.
Once the project is fully operational, it is expected to generate an annual electricity output exceeding 200 million kilowatt-hours, leading to a reduction in carbon emissions of nearly 173,000 tons of CO2 and more than 20 tons of sulfur dioxide, as well as a savings of over 60,000 tons of standard coal.

In response to the high-altitude environment, SANY Heavy Energy has developed a customized turbine specifically for this project, the SI-16036 wind turbine. All technical specifications of the turbine's electrical components have been specially calibrated and tested to meet the demands of high-altitude regions with low air pressure, low air density, and high ultraviolet radiation. This design effectively enhances the utilization efficiency of local wind resources, dispelling the misconception that "wind power is less effective at high altitudes and lacks development value."

To optimize performance in high-altitude wind resource environments, SANY Heavy Energy equipped the turbines for this project with elongated rotor blades, significantly increasing the swept area and enhancing wind capture capabilities. Compared to turbines of the same power output in other regions, these turbines have approximately 20 meters larger rotor diameters and nearly 30% more swept area, equivalent to about 11 basketball courts.
SANY Heavy Energy will continue to deeply engage in wind power technology, relentlessly innovating to support the high-quality development of China's wind power industry, and strive towards achieving the ambitious dual-carbon goals.
